OXFORD, Miss. – The Rev. John Wilkins kicks off the eighth
\nseason of the Lafayette-Oxford-University Summer Sunset
\nSeries Sunday (June 1) in the Grove at the University of
\nMississippi. Wilkins, pastor of Hunter’s Chapel Missionary
\nBaptist Church in Como, is the son of legendary Mississippi
\nbluesman the Rev. Robert Wilkins.<\/span>
\n
<\/p>\n

\nL-O-U concerts are scheduled at 7 p.m. each Sunday in June,
\nwith performers to be announced for the rest of the series.
\nThe programs are free and open to the public. Rain location
\nis Fulton Chapel.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nWilkins, a native of Memphis, is also leader of a
\nmotorcycle group and a performer of gospel blues. His
\nfather recorded blues in the 1920s and ’30s and performed
\ngospel on the blues festival circuit in the 1960s and
\n’70s.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“John really walks the line between secular blues and
\ngospel blues,” said Joe York, producer of the Highway 61
\nradio show. “He’s an incredible guy, an incredible
\nperformer and a great preacher.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nWilkins’ sound is a blend of the “country blues style
\nlearned from his father and gospel-infused music that
\npunctuates his Sunday services at Hunters Chapel Missionary
\nBaptist Church,” said Kate Meacham, assistant director of
\nmarketing for the Gertrude C. Ford Center for the
\nPerforming Arts.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe performance is sponsored by Highway 61 Radio, L-O-U
\nCultural Events Committee and the Ford Center.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nHighway 61 plans to replay a previously taped broadcast of
\nWilkins at 10 p.m. Saturday on Mississippi Public
