\nOXFORD, Miss. – Retired Florida attorney Jerry Center
\nbelieves the University of Mississippi spirit is
\npersonified by its chancellor, Robert Khayat. That’s why
\nCenter and his wife, Susan, have made a gift to the
\nChancellor’s Trust in Khayat’s honor.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Robert Khayat has been a professor, classmate and friend,”
\nCenter said. “He was one of the best teachers I’ve ever
\nhad. I consider him a dear friend, and I think he’s the
\nbest chancellor Ole Miss has ever had. He’s done so much
\nfor the university to make it a better place.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nEstablished in 1975, the Chancellor’s Trust fund is used to
\naddress the university’s greatest needs and requires a
\nminimum gift of $25,000. Center and his family are longtime
\nsupporters of Ole Miss, with previous gifts to the School
\nof Law. His mother, Mildred Hickey, a Baldwyn native,
\nestablished an Ole Miss Women’s Council scholarship in
\n2000.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nKhayat called the Center family a true Ole Miss family.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“We are most grateful for their generous support,” Khayat
\nsaid. “Jerry was an excellent student and quite involved in
\nthe life of the university. This gift will serve to enrich
\nthe experience of the current generation of students.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nCenter received bachelor’s and master’s degrees in business
\nin 1964 and 1967 and a law degree in 1972, all from Ole
\nMiss. His first job after graduating from law school was
\nwith the Oxford law firm Freeland and Gafford (now Freeland
\nand Freeland).
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“My parents were able to invest in scholarship programs for
\nstudents, and Susan and I are blessed to do the same,”
\nCenter said. “I hope that the students who receive
\nassistance will join the Ole Miss family and return part of
\ntheir success to future generations of students.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe gift is part of the university’s MomentUM campaign, a
\nfour-year initiative to raise $200 million. The campaign,
\nwhich ends in December 2008, already has raised more than
\n$180 million for scholarships, graduate fellowships,
\nfaculty support, a basketball practice facility,
\nresidential colleges and a new law school on the Oxford
\ncampus. Also in the plan is a cancer center at the UM
\nMedical Center in Jackson.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
