OXFORD, Miss. – National Geographic Channel producers
\nresearching an upcoming episode of “Explorer” on marijuana
\nquickly discovered they needed to visit the University of
\nMississippi.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFor almost four decades, UM researchers have been growing
\nCannabis plants and providing marijuana and constituent
\ncompounds to the National Institute on Drug Abuse for use
\nby scientists studying the plant, its chemical components
\nand its harmful and potential medicinal uses.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n


A film crew spent most of Wednesday (June 4) interviewing
\nresearchers at the National Center for Natural Products
\nResearch, particularly research professor Mahmoud ElSohly,
\ndirector of the National Institute on Drug Abuse Marijuana
\nProject. The episode is expected to air in late fall.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n“When we started our initial research on the program, a lot
\nof people directed us to Dr. ElSohly,” said Natalie Jaime,
\nassociate producer for the show. “And since this is the
\nonly place that marijuana is legally grown (for research),
\nwe knew we had to come here.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe producers also wanted to focus on the science of
\nmarijuana research and are particularly interested in the
\ncenter’s research to “fingerprint” marijuana seized in drug
\nraids, Jaime said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe National Institute on Drug Abuse began funding the
\nMarijuana Project in 1968. After joining the project in
\n1976, ElSohly became its director in 1980, when his
\npredecessor, Carlton Turner, was named director of
\nPresident Ronald Reagan’s new White House Drug Abuse Policy
\nOffice.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nAfter working on the project for more than 30 years,
\nElSohly, a natural products chemist, has become an expert
\non the more than 400 chemicals found in the plant. Those
\nchemicals were used by ElSohly to develop the Cannabis
\nfingerprint system that distinguishes marijuana samples
\nbased on their geographical origin.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Two plants of the same genetic makeup grown in different
\nparts of the world will be different,” explained Don
\nStanford, the project’s technical services manager.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nResearchers at the center are looking at ways to identify
\nwhere the plants seized in raids originated. “We want to be
\nable to take the materials and do a fingerprint that will
\nenable us to say with 90 (percent) to 95 percent certainty
\nthat the plant was grown in Mexico or Thailand or
\nwherever,” ElSohly said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe National Geographic crew also interviewed Kenneth
\nSufka, professor of psychology and pharmacology, who
\nconducts joint research projects with NCNPR. Sufka
\ndiscussed how marijuana affects the human brain and
\nbehavior. He also discussed several collaborative projects
\nstudying the potential therapeutic effects of cannabis
\nconstituents for a number of clinical syndromes.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe crew has traveled to Northern California and Vancouver
\nto film other parts of the episode, which also examines the
\neconomics of marijuana in the U.S., the work of the Drug
\nEnforcement Agency and proponents of legalized marijuana,
\nJaime said. She was joined by producer Ray Telles,
\ncameraman Mark Knobil and sound technician Erv Reinhart for
\nthe daylong filming.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Explorer” is intended to document unforgettable
\nadventures, extraordinary stories and remarkable
\ndestinations, “from life inside North Korea to gang life on
\nthe streets of America, from ancient mysteries to
