{"id":701,"date":"2008-06-03T01:00:00","date_gmt":"2008-06-03T06:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ezing.me\/transfer\/?p=701"},"modified":"2014-09-23T09:24:31","modified_gmt":"2014-09-23T14:24:31","slug":"encyclopedia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/encyclopedia\/","title":{"rendered":"Mississippi Encyclopedia Nears Final Stage of Production"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span>OXFORD, Miss. &#8211; The Mississippi Encyclopedia, an<br \/>\ninterdisciplinary reference book produced by the University<br \/>\nof Mississippi Center for the Study of Southern Culture, is<br \/>\nin the final production stage and should be released late<br \/>\nnext year.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\n<span>The encyclopedia of everything Mississippi is to feature<br \/>\n1,600 to 1,700 entries on 30 topic areas ranging from civil<br \/>\nrights and the Civil War to visual arts, environment and<br \/>\nfolk life, officials said.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>&#8220;It&#8217;s going to be the most authoritative, reliable and<br \/>\ncomprehensive guide we have to the state of Mississippi,&#8221;<br \/>\nsaid Charles Reagan Wilson, co-editor of the encyclopedia<br \/>\nand Kelly Gene Cook Sr. Chair of History. &#8220;It explores the<br \/>\nhistory of the state, shows the diversity of our culture,<br \/>\nexamines the cultural achievements and provides easy access<br \/>\nfor students and teachers and anybody interested in the<br \/>\nstate.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><br \/><span>Ted Ownby, interim director of CSSC, is co-editor of the<br \/>\nencyclopedia. Ann Abadie, associate director of the center,<br \/>\nhas acted as the consulting director and chose the<br \/>\nencyclopedia&#8217;s name.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\n<span>&#8220;We really have extraordinary entries on a number of<br \/>\ncrucial topics,&#8221; Ownby said. &#8220;The goal is a thorough<br \/>\naccounting, lots of detail and a scholarly approach to the<br \/>\nrange of topics that come up in thinking about Mississippi<br \/>\npast and present.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>The publication has relied on 30 associate editors,<br \/>\nincluding UM faculty members Charles Ross, associate<br \/>\nprofessor of history and African-American studies; David<br \/>\nSansing, professor emeritus of history; Michael Dean,<br \/>\nassociate dean emeritus of liberal arts and associate<br \/>\nprofessor emeritus of English; John T. Edge, director of<br \/>\nthe center&#8217;s Southern Foodways Alliance; and Jay Johnson,<br \/>\nprofessor of anthropology and director of archaeological<br \/>\nresearch.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Ownby said the book will &#8220;have a kind of an edge to it.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>&#8220;I think most of us would agree, a state encyclopedia on<br \/>\nMississippi has possibilities for loving and hating that a<br \/>\nlot of other state encyclopedias might not have,&#8221; he said.<br \/>\n&#8220;We will give as full treatment as we know how to a range<br \/>\nof particularly harsh problems in Mississippi, and we will<br \/>\nalso show the range of ways that people have resisted,<br \/>\nfought, worked around and created in response to some of<br \/>\nthose problems.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>The idea for the Mississippi Encyclopedia was proposed in<br \/>\n2002 by the University Press of Mississippi, which will<br \/>\npublish the book. The project was assigned to CSSC based on<br \/>\nits publication of the Encyclopedia of Southern Culture and<br \/>\nNew Encyclopedia of Southern Culture volumes. Work on the<br \/>\nencyclopedia began in 2003.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Odie Lindsey, the encyclopedia&#8217;s research assistant, said<br \/>\nthat after years of research and writing, they are now in<br \/>\nthe process of editing the book&#8217;s content, with about 1,400<br \/>\nentries already completed. Other state agencies involved in<br \/>\nthe work are the Mississippi Department of Archives and<br \/>\nHistory, the Mississippi Humanities Council and scores of<br \/>\nentry authors, many of whom are the most recognized<br \/>\nscholars on a topic.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>The book&#8217;s music section is the longest of the 30 topic<br \/>\nareas and Ownby said the civil rights section is probably<br \/>\nthe &#8220;fullest.&#8221; The publication also features a section on<br \/>\nmyths and representations of the state.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span> &#8220;I think this is going to revise the world&#8217;s image of<br \/>\nMississippi because it gets past the stereotypes about<br \/>\nMississippi,&#8221; Wilson said. &#8220;We have such a world class<br \/>\nculture, and I think this book is going to showcase that<br \/>\nculture and help to change the attitudes about<br \/>\nMississippi.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>The Mississippi Encyclopedia will be the first of its kind<br \/>\nin recent years, with the last state reference book<br \/>\npublished in the early 1900s.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>For more information, call 662-915-5993.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>OXFORD, Miss. &#8211; The Mississippi Encyclopedia, an interdisciplinary reference book produced by the University of Mississippi Center for the Study of Southern Culture, is in the final production stage and should be released late next year.
