The three-day<br \/>\nintensive workshop includes panels, lectures, open-mike<br \/>\nreadings and creative discussions.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\n<span>The registration deadline is Monday, June 2, and<br \/>\npre-registration is required. Tuition is $325 per person.<br \/>\nCall 662-915-5811 or e-mail bthompso@olemiss.edu.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Director Neal &#8220;M.O.&#8221; Walsh said the professional writers on<br \/>\nthe workshop staff are enthusiastic about this year&#8217;s<br \/>\nevent. Walsh, a recent graduate of the Ole Miss MFA<br \/>\nprogram, is an up-and-coming fiction and screenwriter.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>&#8220;Concentrated workshops like ours give budding writers a<br \/>\ngreat shot of adrenaline,&#8221; Walsh said. &#8220;You spend three<br \/>\ndays with people just like you who not only love literature<br \/>\nbut also have a burning desire to write and write well.<br \/>\nSeeing that you&#8217;re part of a community like this, and<br \/>\nmeeting writers who have had success in publishing, really<br \/>\nmakes you want to get back in front of that typewriter.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>The workshop staff also includes Beth Ann Fennelly, UM<br \/>\nassociate professor of English who recently released her<br \/>\nthird collection of poetry, &#8220;Unmentionables&#8221;; Jere Hoar, UM<br \/>\nprofessor emeritus of journalism whose work includes &#8220;Body<br \/>\nParts&#8221;, a collection of short stories, and the novel &#8220;The<br \/>\nHit&#8221;; Mississippi writer Scott Morris, author of the<br \/>\ncritically acclaimed novels &#8220;Waiting for April&#8221; and &#8220;The<br \/>\nTotal View of Taftly&#8221;; and literary performing artist<br \/>\nRebecca Jernigan.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>&#8220;There are a lot of local folks who are interested in<br \/>\nwriting, but usually because of full-time jobs, they can&#8217;t<br \/>\ntake a semester-long writing class,&#8221; Fennelly said. &#8220;The<br \/>\nYoknapatawpha workshop is well suited to their needs.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Workshop participants are required to submit a writing<br \/>\nsample beforehand. All forms of creative writing are<br \/>\nwelcome, though the focus is primarily on fiction, Walsh<br \/>\nsaid. Writers who submit complete works will be guided with<br \/>\nrevisions and critiques throughout the workshop, and<br \/>\nwriters with works in the initial stages will be primed<br \/>\nwith advice and direction for their compositions.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Participants also get an opportunity to experience the<br \/>\n&#8216;writer&#8217;s town&#8217; of Oxford and touring William Faulkner&#8217;s<br \/>\nhome, Rowan Oak. Other off-campus outings include trips to<br \/>\nSquare Books, City Grocery and Taylor Grocery.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>&#8220;Whether strolling through the great bookstores on the<br \/>\nsquare, bumping into one of the many authors that live and<br \/>\nwork here, sipping a cocktail and people watching, or just<br \/>\ncatching the sunset as it disappears beyond the north<br \/>\nMississippi hills, people get a sense that stories are the<br \/>\nheart of this place,&#8221; Walsh said. &#8220;And, as always, stories<br \/>\nare looking for tellers.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Daily workshop sessions take place at the Ole Miss-Oxford<br \/>\nDepot. The schedule begins at 9 a.m. each day and ends at<br \/>\napproximately 10 p.m. The workshop wraps up around 3:30<br \/>\np.m. Sunday.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Tuition includes lectures, panels, readings, discussions<br \/>\nand one evening reception at Taylor Grocery. The fee does<br \/>\nnot include transportation, lodging or meals. Full-time<br \/>\nstudents who seek financial assistance should contact<br \/>\nBarbara Thompson at bthompso@olemiss.edu for information on<br \/>\nreduced fees.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>All writing samples must be submitted by June 2 for the<br \/>\nworkshop leader to familiarize himself with each<br \/>\nparticipant&#8217;s style and subject matter. Samples should be<br \/>\nno longer than 10 double-spaced pages.
