\nOXFORD, Miss. – Aspiring writers are invited to hone their
\nskills at the University of Mississippi’s Yoknapatawpha
\nSummer Writers Workshop June 6-8.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nAttendees are to engage in various creative writing
\nexercises under the instruction of local authors, UM
\nfaculty members and other professionals. The three-day
\nintensive workshop includes panels, lectures, open-mike
\nreadings and creative discussions.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe registration deadline is Monday, June 2, and
\npre-registration is required. Tuition is $325 per person.

\nDirector Neal “M.O.” Walsh said the professional writers on
\nthe workshop staff are enthusiastic about this year’s
\nevent. Walsh, a recent graduate of the Ole Miss MFA
\nprogram, is an up-and-coming fiction and screenwriter.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Concentrated workshops like ours give budding writers a
\ngreat shot of adrenaline,” Walsh said. “You spend three
\ndays with people just like you who not only love literature
\nbut also have a burning desire to write and write well.
\nSeeing that you’re part of a community like this, and
\nmeeting writers who have had success in publishing, really
\nmakes you want to get back in front of that typewriter.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe workshop staff also includes Beth Ann Fennelly, UM
\nassociate professor of English who recently released her
\nthird collection of poetry, “Unmentionables”; Jere Hoar, UM
\nprofessor emeritus of journalism whose work includes “Body
\nParts”, a collection of short stories, and the novel “The
\nHit”; Mississippi writer Scott Morris, author of the
\ncritically acclaimed novels “Waiting for April” and “The
\nTotal View of Taftly”; and literary performing artist
\nRebecca Jernigan.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“There are a lot of local folks who are interested in
\nwriting, but usually because of full-time jobs, they can’t
\ntake a semester-long writing class,” Fennelly said. “The
\nYoknapatawpha workshop is well suited to their needs.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nWorkshop participants are required to submit a writing
\nsample beforehand. All forms of creative writing are
\nwelcome, though the focus is primarily on fiction, Walsh
\nsaid. Writers who submit complete works will be guided with
\nrevisions and critiques throughout the workshop, and
\nwriters with works in the initial stages will be primed
\nwith advice and direction for their compositions.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nParticipants also get an opportunity to experience the
\n‘writer’s town’ of Oxford and touring William Faulkner’s
\nhome, Rowan Oak. Other off-campus outings include trips to
\nSquare Books, City Grocery and Taylor Grocery.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Whether strolling through the great bookstores on the
\nsquare, bumping into one of the many authors that live and
\nwork here, sipping a cocktail and people watching, or just
\ncatching the sunset as it disappears beyond the north
\nMississippi hills, people get a sense that stories are the
\nheart of this place,” Walsh said. “And, as always, stories
\nare looking for tellers.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nDaily workshop sessions take place at the Ole Miss-Oxford
\nDepot. The schedule begins at 9 a.m. each day and ends at
\napproximately 10 p.m. The workshop wraps up around 3:30
\np.m. Sunday.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nTuition includes lectures, panels, readings, discussions
\nand one evening reception at Taylor Grocery. The fee does
\nnot include transportation, lodging or meals. Full-time
\nstudents who seek financial assistance should contact

\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nAll writing samples must be submitted by June 2 for the
\nworkshop leader to familiarize himself with each
\nparticipant’s style and subject matter. Samples should be
\nno longer than 10 double-spaced pages. The workshop format
\nis informal, and participants are asked to dress
\ncomfortably and casually.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
