OXFORD, Miss. — Ten University of Mississippi sophomores
\nhave been selected to change places with Korean university
\nstudents this summer in a program sponsored by UM’s Trent
\nLott Leadership Institute and Study Abroad Office.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe program pairs UM students with Konkuk University
\nstudents for a month of experiences in Mississippi,
\nWashington, D.C., and Seoul, South Korea. The students are
\ngiven the opportunity to learn together and from each other
\non topics ranging from international diplomacy to pop
\nculture.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Because of its phenomenal economic development, South
\nKorea has a large role in global economics and diplomacy,”
\nsaid Blair McElroy, study abroad adviser. “And thanks to
\nthe Web, others are learning about Korean pop culture, such
\nas the Korean Wave movies and Korean music. The Lott
\nLeadership exchange program is a dynamic and fulfilling
\nopportunity to explore South Korean culture and business
\nwith a diverse group of peers.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n


The selective program is open to rising sophomores of any
\nmajor who display academic excellence and community
\nleadership skills. Participants are Scarlett Andrews, a
\npublic policy and international studies major from
\nRiddleton, Tenn.; Chelsea Caveny, a public policy
\nleadership major from Hattiesburg; Meaghan Gandy, a public
\npolicy major from Yorktown, Va.; Robert Hamilton, a public
\npolicy and philosophy major from Lebanon, Tenn.; Matthew
\nHenry, a public policy and international studies major,
\nAlex McLelland, a public policy leadership major, and John
\nNordan III, a public policy major, all of Madison; Sarah
\nRogers, an undecided major from Amory; Emilia Wilson, a
\npublic policy leadership major from Gulfport; and Katherine
\nWatson, a public policy leadership and Southern studies
\nmajor from Louisville.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWatson said the exposure to a foreign country and its
\nvalues will be beneficial when she begins to pursue a
\ncareer.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“I will be able not only to see the sights and landmarks of
\nKorea but also to hear the opinions and perspectives that
\nthe Korean students hold in regard to the areas that we
\nwill study,” Watson said. “It is a unique way to augment
\nour learning in our increasingly global world.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe exchange begins June 30, with joint meetings and
\ndiscussions before the group travels in the United States
\nfor approximately two weeks prior to leaving for South
\nKorea.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
