UM photo by Robert Jordan.\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>OXFORD, Miss. &#8211; School-aged children might not put reading<br \/>\nat the top of their lists of &#8220;cool&#8221; things to do this<br \/>\nsummer, but the University of Mississippi&#8217;s Center for<br \/>\nExcellence in Literacy Instruction is trying to change that<br \/>\nattitude.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>With support from the Hearin Foundation, the center held<br \/>\nits first Summer Reading Camp this week (June 9-13). The<br \/>\ngoal was to promote positive reading experiences and<br \/>\nlifelong reading habits using literature circles, which<br \/>\nincorporate independent reading and cooperative learning<br \/>\nthrough small group discussions and projects.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><br \/><span>Judging from student reactions, the camp was a success.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\n<span>&#8220;It&#8217;s cool,&#8221; said 11-year-old Jacob Hall.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>&#8220;It&#8217;s very cool,&#8221; agreed Kyla Malone, 10.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p><span>Hall and Malone, both of Oxford, were among about 50 local<br \/>\nfourth- and fifth-graders who gathered at Della Davidson<br \/>\nElementary School for the weeklong camp. Organizers were<br \/>\nAngela Rutherford, director of the center and assistant<br \/>\nprofessor of elementary education, and LeAnn Carter, master<br \/>\nteacher in the center. UM photo by Robert Jordan.\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>Laura Beth Wilson of Macon, a senior education major, was<br \/>\namong the UM students who spent the past few weeks<br \/>\npreparing for the camp. During the camp, they worked with<br \/>\nthe reading groups, guiding their discussions and projects.<br \/>\nThe camp gave them classroom experience and counted toward<br \/>\ntheir observation hours, a requirement for graduation.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Wilson saw firsthand how literature circles help students<br \/>\nopen up about the books they read. &#8220;They get into it,&#8221; she<br \/>\nsaid. &#8220;It&#8217;s been so fun.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>The campers each chose a book to read from a list of 15<br \/>\ntitles, including &#8220;Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry&#8221; by Mildred<br \/>\nD. Taylor, &#8220;No Dogs Allowed&#8221; by Bill Wallace, &#8220;Bud, Not<br \/>\nBuddy&#8221; by Christopher Paul Curtis and &#8220;Rules&#8221; by Cynthia<br \/>\nLord.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>The campers were divided into small groups based on their<br \/>\nbook choices to discuss with their classmates what they had<br \/>\nread and to work on projects related to the book. The<br \/>\nprojects ranged from crafting story quilts and making story<br \/>\nhats to putting on plays and designing board games, and all<br \/>\nof the students wrote &#8220;I Am&#8221; poems in which they took on<br \/>\nthe persona of a character from their book.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>&#8220;I am a smack talker,&#8221; said Preston Phillips, 10, of<br \/>\nOxford, reciting a line from his poem depicting<br \/>\ntroublemaker T.J. from &#8220;Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>As students shared their poems and other projects, they<br \/>\ndiscussed what they thought of their books.
