Refreshments are to be provided.

Hu, 29, who plans to return to the University of California at Berkeley
in mid-July to finish his doctorate in film studies, has been in Oxford
since early June writing a series of poems for his developing
manuscript “Greenhouses, Lighthouses.”

“I hope to complete a series of palinodes – they are poems that
literally sing back or recant something,” Hu said. “My series asks if
this may be applied to political concepts such as reconciliation and
amnesty.”

Hu described his developing manuscript as a “jigsaw puzzle” because he rearranges the pages frequently on the dining room table of the Grisham house, where he is staying during his residence.

As Hu writes, he tries to examine the origins of words that describe conflict and weaves in details from the past, such as the activism of the 1960s and modern occurrences such as the disappearance of honeybees from many areas of the country, he said.

The son of a physicist and a humanities professor, Hu took an unusual road on his way to a poet’s life. At 15, he enrolled at Princeton University, where he majored in comparative literature and computer science. At 19, he was a computer programmer who “designed a really small portion of the Internet” while working for AT&T. But as the dot-com bubble of the 1990s fizzled, he found himself studying creative writing at the University of Michigan.

“My friends work as bankers, lawyers and consultants, and that’s sort of the life that was cut out for me and that I didn’t take,” he said. “I think there are really some more interesting things that I can do in the world. But that life is there and it’s temping sometimes to fall back into it.”

His undergraduate thesis developed into “Book of Motion” (University of Georgia Press, 2003). His master’s thesis and second book of poems, “Mine,” which was a finalist for the ForeWord Book of the Year Award and winner of the Eisner Prize, was published by Ausable Press in 2007.

In general, Hu finds Oxford to be a relaxing place to spend a summer, he said.

“I’m a stereotypical, private, city person and I’ve had to unlearn my suspicion of strangers here,” he said. “I really like the fact that if I decide to leave my house, I will run into someone interesting or who has something interesting to talk about.”

Although the Summer Poet in Residence program is in only its second year, it has been in development for years, said Beth Ann Fennelly, associate professor of English and director of the residency.

“I had a residency like it at the University of Arizona and it was really great,” Fennelly said. “When my husband (Tom Franklin) was in the Grisham Writer-in-Residence, I realized that house is empty all summer.”

The program, which began last year with poet Paula Bohince, is jointly funded by the English department, College of Liberal Arts and the Office of Outreach and Summer School.

Besides his writing demands, Hu has been a visiting lecturer in literature classes throughout the summer. Part of the residency requires the poet to enrich the quality of the summer curriculum.

“A lot of times when you come to college, you have this idea in your head of being a writer,” said Tim Summers, a junior English major who met with Hu in his 20th century poetry class. “When you can see someone in front of you who is actually doing it and making a living at it, that idea suddenly becomes more real.”

For more information about the Summer Poet in Residence program visit http://www.olemiss.edu/depts/english/mfa/SPiR.html

Tung-Hui Hu OXFORD, Miss. – University of Mississippi Summer Poet in Residence Tung-Hui Hu is slated to read selections from his work Tuesday evening (July 8) at Off Square Books in Oxford.
