OXFORD, Miss. – University of Mississippi alumnus Creighton Wilson of Gainesville, Fla., has created the Dr. Creighton L. Wilson Scholarship Endowment at UM with a gift of $100,000.
\n“I wanted to repay Ole Miss for all it has done for me,” Wilson said. “Although I don’t get back to Oxford much, I still have Ole Miss blood in my veins.”<\/p>\n

The endowment promises to provide a permanent source of scholarship support to deserving Ole Miss students.<\/p>\n

“I hope this scholarship will help students who need it most,” Wilson
\nsaid. “When I think back, I had to work my way through college. I just
\ndon’t want students to have to struggle like I did.”From his
\nhumble beginnings growing up on a farm in Lambert, Wilson entered Ole
\nMiss in 1944 at age 14. At the time, he was the youngest freshman ever
\nto enter the university, where his nickname became Little Flea because
\nhe was just 4 feet 10 inches tall and weighed only 90 pounds.<\/p>\n

Wilson remembers struggling to make ends meet as a student, often
\neating tomato sandwiches for lunch when money ran out at the end of the
\nmonth. He credits much of his success at Ole Miss to Malcolm Guess,
\nthen dean of men, who gave him a job on campus.<\/p>\n

“Dean Guess knew I didn’t have much money, so he gave me the job of
\nfire marshal of the third floor of the YMCA building, and with the job
\ncame a free room,” he said.<\/p>\n

Wilson earned a bachelor’s degree from Ole Miss in 1949 and a master’s
\ndegree from the University of Arkansas in 1950. In 1953, he earned a
\nmedical certificate from UM before going on to earn a medical degree
\nfrom the University of Tennessee. For the majority of his career in
\nmedicine, Wilson specialized in orthopedic surgery. He also taught
\nclinical orthopedics and rehab at the University of Miami Medical
\nSchool.<\/p>\n

“This generous gift reflects the dedication and commitment of Dr.
\nCreighton Wilson to the University of Mississippi,” said Wendell
\nWeakley, president of the UM Foundation. “We are profoundly grateful
\nfor his support and for helping create more opportunities for Ole Miss
\nstudents.”<\/p>\n

Wilson comes from a long line of Ole Miss alumni. His father, C.L.
\nWilson, and his three brothers, Robert, Albert and George, all
\ngraduated from the university.<\/p>\n

Wilson’s gift is part of the university’s MomentUM campaign, a
\nfour-year initiative to raise $200 million. Funds raised from the
\nMomentUM campaign, which ends in December 2008, will support
\nscholarships, graduate fellowships, faculty support, a basketball
\npractice facility, residential colleges and a new law school on the
\nOxford campus. Also in the plans are a cancer center at the UM Medical
\nCenter and a new building to house the School of Pharmacy, both in
\nJackson.
