OXFORD, Miss. – An exhibition by internationally renowned artist William Christenberry opens this weekend at the University of Mississippi Museum.<\/p>\n

The exhibit, “William Christenberry: Site\/Possession,” which runs through Sept. 21, opens with a 1 p.m. reception Sunday (July 20) for the Faulkner and Yoknapatawpha Conference. Both Christenberry and Andrea Douglas, curator at the University of Virginia Art Museum, plan to attend a second public reception Sept. 7.<\/p>\n

“William Christenberry is most well known around this area and to many elsewhere as a photographer of the South’s landscapes and vernacular architecture,” said Albert Sperath, director of University Museum and Historic Houses. “This exhibition features his drawings and sculptures with only a few photos. The show reveals an artist at ease with many media and in tune with their abilities.”<\/p>\n

Funding for the exhibit was underwritten by UM alumni John and Renee Grisham, Sperath said.<\/p>\n

“John and I were involved with William Christenberry’s exhibition at the University of Virginia,” Renee Grisham said. “Christenberry’s work is impressive and should be seen by many, because it confronts our troubled past. We are pleased to sponsor this exhibit at Ole Miss, and we are thankful to Robert Khayat and Albert Sperath.”<\/p>\n

An Alabama native, Christenberry majored in art at the University of Alabama. Since 1968 he has taught at the Cocoran School of Art. Among the many museums that own his art are the Whitney Musuem of American Art, Museum of Modern Art, National Museum of American Art, Smithsonian Institution and San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Christenberry is represented by Hemphill Fine Arts of Washington, D.C.<\/p>\n
