{"id":745,"date":"2008-07-29T09:33:20","date_gmt":"2008-07-29T14:33:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ezing.me\/transfer\/?p=745"},"modified":"2014-09-23T09:24:26","modified_gmt":"2014-09-23T14:24:26","slug":"joserivera","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/joserivera\/","title":{"rendered":"MBA Student Makes List of Top 50 Hispanic Business Scholars in U.S."},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"border: 1px solid #000000; margin: 7px; padding: 8px; width: 211px; float: right; background-color: #ffffff\" class=\"jce?caption\">\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/ezing.me\/transfer\/wp-content\/uploads\/stories\/07-2008\/jose-rivera?300.jpg\" alt=\"jose-rivera?300.jpg\" style=\"border: 0px none #000000; margin: 0pt; width: 211px; height: 282px; float: right\" title=\"jose-rivera?300.jpg\" height=\"282\" width=\"211\" \/><\/p>\n<div style=\"padding: 8px; color: #000000; text-align: center; clear: both\" class=\"jce?caption?text\">\n<b>Jose Rivera. <\/b><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 8pt\">UM photo by Lindsey Phillips<\/span>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\nOXFORD, Miss. &#8211; University of Mississippi business graduate student Jose Rivera has been named one of the nation&#8217;s top 50 Hispanic business scholars by the Association of Latino Professionals in Finance and Accounting.<\/p>\n<p>The honor includes a scholarship award from ALPFA, as well as accommodations from Deloitte LLC for Rivera to attend ALPFA&#8217;s annual convention in August and deliver a speech.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n&#8220;For Jose to achieve national recognition while competing against<br \/>\nstudents from all the finest business schools in the nation is a truly<br \/>\nimpressive feat,&#8221; said Charles Noble, UM director of MBA programs and<br \/>\nassociate professor of marketing. &#8220;This accomplishment reflects<br \/>\nforemost on Jose and the hard work he has done before coming to Ole<br \/>\nMiss and since entering our program. For our program, this shows the<br \/>\nhigh quality of our students and the success we are having in creating<br \/>\nmore diversity in the student body, while maintaining high performance<br \/>\nstandards.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>Rivera, 25, native of Arlington, Va., received his<br \/>\nundergraduate degree in electrical engineering with a minor in finance<br \/>\nfrom the University of Michigan. He applied for the ALPFA award in<br \/>\nDecember while completing his MBA program prerequisite coursework at<br \/>\nthe University of Southern Mississippi&#8217;s Gulf Coast campus. Although<br \/>\nspecific scholarship values have not been announced, amounts range from<br \/>\n$2,000 to $10,000.<\/p>\n<p>As an undergraduate in Michigan, Rivera was<br \/>\nan Air Force ROTC cadet before serving three years as chief of<br \/>\nengineering in the U.S. Air Force at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi.<br \/>\nDuring his tour of duty, Rivera led Hurricane Katrina reconstruction<br \/>\nefforts on base and was deployed to Afghanistan, where he saw combat as<br \/>\na joint task force platoon leader. Since his service separation in May,<br \/>\nhe has worked as an accounting officer at Oxford University Bank.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0Rivera<br \/>\nsaid he was surprised to have been chosen for the national honor, which<br \/>\nhe attributes in part to the combination of his educational<br \/>\nachievements and leadership skills developed during his involvement<br \/>\nwith the Air Force. As an undergraduate, he was a member of the Air<br \/>\nForce ROTC before serving three years at Keesler.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0&#8220;There was a<br \/>\nlarge pool of applicants, so to be selected as one of the top 50 is<br \/>\nquite an accomplishment,&#8221; Rivera said. &#8220;It was very much an honor. It&#8217;s<br \/>\nalso indicative of the people who have helped me, including my<br \/>\nprofessors at Ole Miss and the University of Michigan and many of my<br \/>\nmilitary mentors.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0Rivera, who plans to pursue a career in<br \/>\ninvestment banking and financial advising, has been offered on-site<br \/>\ninterviews from several sponsors of ALPFA&#8217;s annual convention. Aside<br \/>\nfrom attending multiple seminar sessions during the event, he plans to<br \/>\ntake advantage of the opportunity to network with recruiters from<br \/>\nseveral large investment banking firms such as Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan<br \/>\nand Banc of America Securities.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0&#8220;I am particularly impressed<br \/>\nwith Jose&#8217;s strong focus on success, not just in the program but in the<br \/>\nwell-defined career path he has laid out for post-graduation,&#8221; Noble<br \/>\nsaid. &#8220;Jose has been a very strong student in the program so far.
