OXFORD, Miss. – Two outstanding Mississippi students are recipients of
\nthe University of Mississippi’s oldest and one of its most prestigious
\nscholastic awards, the $40,000 Robert M. Carrier Scholarship.<\/p>\n

Logan D. Fair of New Albany and Megan Elise Gargiulo of Long Beach, who
\nplan to enter Ole Miss as freshmen this fall, were selected for the
\nscholarship based on their records of academic excellence and
\nleadership.<\/p>\n

Among the Mid-South’s oldest endowed scholarships, the Carrier was
\nestablished in 1955 to “bring the state’s future leaders” to UM for
\n“maximum scholastic and personal development.” Nominations for the
\naward are made by UM admissions counselors, and trustees of the Robert
\nM. and Lenore Carrier Foundation choose the recipients.<\/p>\n

“Since 1955, Mississippi’s finest students have become Carrier Scholars
\nthrough the help of Mr. and Mrs. Carrier,” said Chancellor Robert
\nKhayat. “Logan Fair and Megan Gargiulo will continue their vision of
\nbeing lifelong leaders at Ole Miss, now and in the future.”

Both students will be members of the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College and the Chancellor’s Leadership Class.<\/p>\n

At New Albany High School, Fair was ranked first in his class of 104. He was a member of the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, the Speech and Debate Team, and Spanish Club. He was on the varsity football and golf teams and was active in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Boy Scouts of America.<\/p>\n

Fair, the son of Larry and Valerie Fair, said he has always wanted to attend Ole Miss, since both of his parents attended and his sister is a recent graduate. “The Carrier scholarship will help me to more easily pay for college, which will hopefully allow me to more easily attend medical school,” Fair said. “I am looking forward to meeting people and making friends.”<\/p>\n

Gargiulo, the daughter of Jackie and Robert Gargiulo, was a National Merit Finalist at Our Lady Academy, a member of the National Honor Society and an AP Scholar Award winner.<\/p>\n

She said she is excited about the possibility of graduating from college debt-free as a Carrier Scholar. “I think the prestige of the scholarship will help to open doors for me that another award may not have done,” she said. “Certainly I hope to live up to the academic expectations that go hand-in-hand with receiving the Carrier Scholarship.”<\/p>\n

During a recent visit to the Oxford campus, she said she pictured herself studying under the trees on a nice day and realized she had made the right choice. “I also hope to sign up for art classes, and the second I get on campus this fall, I am signing up for ballroom dancing classes,” she said. “Hopefully I can find someone to rope into dancing with me.<\/p>\n

“I’m so excited about meeting new people, living in a dorm and making a fresh start.\u00a0 Really, I’m excited about everything about college. I look forward to pursuing things I have always wanted to try, but never quite had time for.”<\/p>\n
