Cawelti Award for the Best&nbsp;Textbook\/Primer from the Popular Culture Association.<\/p>\n<p>Gussow, associate professor of <a href=\"https:\/\/english.olemiss.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">English<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/southernstudies.olemiss.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Southern studies<\/a> at the <a href=\"http:\/\/olemiss.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">University of Mississippi<\/a>, is pleased that his efforts are receiving recognition.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a nice honor, and it&#8217;s wonderful vindication for the nine years I spent researching and writing the book,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>The mission of the Popular Culture Association is to promote the study of popular culture throughout the world through the establishment and promotion of conferences, publications and discussion. Aiding the PCA in this goal is the PCA Endowment, which offers support for scholars and&nbsp;scholarship.<\/p>\n<p>The Cawelti award is given for noteworthy textbooks, primers and scholarly books on popular and American&nbsp;culture.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The award committee selected Adam Gussow&#8217;s &#8216;Beyond the Crossroads&#8217; as this year&#8217;s John G. Cawelti Award recipient because it was a thoroughly researched, well-written and&nbsp;innovative project that demonstrated how the devil has functioned as a malleable metaphor within the history of the blues,&#8221; said Kraig Larkin, associate professor of history at Colby-Sawyer College. &#8220;The committee valued Adam&#8217;s ability to illustrate how the devil appears and reappears at specific moments in American history, often to enable musicians an opportunity to deliver a disguised critique of racial power.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_70761\" style=\"width: 178px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/adam-gussow-examines-devil-blues-new-book\/adam-publicity-photo\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-70761\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-70761\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-70761\" src=\"https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Adam-Gussow-crop-168x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"168\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Adam-Gussow-crop-168x300.jpg 168w, https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Adam-Gussow-crop-768x1368.jpg 768w, https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Adam-Gussow-crop.jpg 1150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 168px) 100vw, 168px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-70761\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Adam Gussow<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In &#8220;Beyond the Crossroads,&#8221; Gussow takes the full measure of the devil&#8217;s presence. Working from original transcriptions of more than 125 recordings released during the past 90 years, Gussow explores the varied uses to which black Southern blues artists have put this trouble-sowing, love-wrecking, but also empowering, figure.<\/p>\n<p>The book culminates with a bold reinterpretation of Robert Johnson&#8217;s music and a provocative investigation of the way in which the citizens of Clarksdale managed to rebrand a commercial hub as &#8220;the crossroads&#8221; in 1999, claiming Johnson and the devil as their own.<strong> &nbsp;&nbsp; <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Gussow&#8217;s first academic monograph, &#8220;Seems Like Murder Here: Southern Violence and the Blues Tradition,&#8221; was an honorable-mention for the Cawelti in 2003, and his second academic book, &#8220;Journeyman&#8217;s Road: Modern Blues Lives from Faulkner&#8217;s Mississippi to Post-9\/11 New York,&#8221; was an honorable mention for the PCA\/ACA Ray and Pat Browne Award.<\/p>\n<p>He is also the author of &#8220;Mister Satan&#8217;s Apprentice: A Blues Memoir.&#8221;<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>OXFORD, Miss. \u2013 Scholar and musician Adam Gussow explores the story of the devil and the blues though more than just cliches in his book &#8220;Beyond the Crossroads: The Devil and the Blues Tradition,&#8221; published last fall by University of North Carolina Press.
