OXFORD, Miss. – Justine magazine, in conjunction with the University of
\nMississippi Department of Journalism, is sponsoring the forum and
\ndebate “’08 Presidential Election: Teens and Politics” Sept. 9 at UM.<\/p>\n
Socially active and politically responsible young people ages 16 through 21, both male and female, are being sought to apply for the opportunity to serve on the panel. Participants must be able to tackle questions and issues that concern them about the country’s direction and the impact of the upcoming presidential election. Applications can be found at http:\/\/www.justinemagazine.com\/ and must be postmarked or e-mailed by Thursday (Aug. 28).<\/p>\n
“With this year’s election involving historic numbers of young people, this forum will provide another venue for teen voices to be heard,” said Jana Kerr Pettey, Justine publisher and editorial director. Pettey will moderate the forum.<\/p>\n
The nonpartisan discussion, at 4 p.m. in Overby Center Auditorium, is free and open to the public. It is among more than 50 events scheduled at the university to help prepare students and local audiences for the first presidential debate of 2008, to be hosted at UM Sept. 26. Frontrunners John McCain and Barack Obama are scheduled to debate national security and foreign policy.<\/p>\n
“(The Justine forum) is a great opportunity to get our teens involved in the political process from the beginning,” said Samir Husni, journalism chairman.<\/p>\n
Justine is a nationally distributed teen girl lifestyle magazine published six times a year from its Memphis, Tenn., offices and reaching millions of teen girls.<\/p>\n
