\nOXFORD, Miss. -\u00ad From billion-dollar private equity funds
\nand hedge funds that are invested in everything from real
\nestate in Bulgaria to wind farms in Germany, Jan Eftink is
\nlearning international accounting principles firsthand in
\nthe London office of Deloitte & Touche and it’s not even a
\nreal job.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nEftink, of Chaffee, Mo., is among 68 senior accountancy
\nstudents at the University of Mississippi who are interning
\nthis spring semester across the U.S. and in London, thanks
\nto the Patterson School’s highly successful internship
\nprogram. Besides getting real-world experience, the interns
\nare paid for their work and earn three hours of academic
\ncredit.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“We continue to be extremely pleased with our internship
\nprogram,” said Interim Dean Mark Wilder, who has been
\nhelping students “test the water” since becoming the
\nprogram’s director in 2004. “It’s a growth experience that
\ngives the students a whole new perspective on the field,
\nand places them at a competitive advantage in the job
\nmarket.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nFeedback from the firms accepting interns and from the
\ninterns themselves attest to the caliber of students from
\nthe Patterson School. For one, Gerilynn Petty of
\nStarkville, interning with PricewaterhouseCoopers in
\nDallas, the experience is giving her confidence that she
\nwill be competitive in the job market.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“I’m learning new things with each audit engagement \u00ad both
\nabout accounting and about me as a person,” Petty said. “I
\ncan truly say that my professors from the Patterson School
\nhave prepared me well, as my abilities have proven to be
\nvery comparable to those of my counterparts from top
\nranking schools such as Texas A&M and the University of
\nTexas. I am grateful for this opportunity.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nUnlike her fellow student interns who are learning the
\nAmerican ways of accounting at U.S. firms \u00ad from Dallas,
\nHouston and St. Louis to Shreveport, Nashville, Birmingham
\nand Mobile \u00ad Eftink is being exposed to the British tax
\nsystem in her work with the firm’s Tax Services Group. She
\nchose the location because of the unique learning
\nopportunity.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Our main clients for the busy season are multi-million to
\nbillion dollar private equity funds and hedge funds that
\nare investing in everything from real estate in Bulgaria to
\nwind farms in Germany,” said UM accountancy alumna Holly
\nPrater, who has worked in Deloitte’s London office since
\n2004 and recruits student interns for the firm’s tax group.
\n“Interns not only will learn the tax laws in regards to
\nthese investments, but they will also be learning the
\neconomic aspects of how these investments work.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nPrater said they received more than 50 resumes and
\ninterviewed around 30 students interested in the program
\nbefore making offers that included UM’s Eftink and Jeannie
\nBlair of Dallas. Blair is interning this spring in
\nDeloitte’s Nashville office, with plans to intern this
\nsummer at Deloitte’s in London.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nBesides the unique learning experience, interns who travel
\nabroad have the added advantage of seeing the world.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“I am really enjoying London,” Eftink said. “I have visited
\na few places near my flat, like China Town, Covet Gardens
\nand the large shopping area on Oxford and Regents Street. I
\nhave also been to the pubs and bars, watched rugby and ice
\nskated.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nWhile sightseeing in Alabama may not match that in the
\nU.K., Stephanie Henson of Jackson is enjoying immersing
\nherself in audit practice at KPMG in Birmingham.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“My favorite part of the internship so far has been
\nlearning about various industries,” Henson said. “I have
\nhad the opportunity to audit a car manufacturer, a real
\nestate company and a bank, and have found it very
\ninteresting to see how different auditing can be for those
\ndifferent industries.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nNetworking with professionals in the hosting firms and with
\nstudents from other schools is another opportunity for the
\ninterns. Mark Adcock of Jackson, who is interning in
\nMemphis with Ernst & Young, said his favorite part so far
\nhas been the firm’s intern training program in Atlanta and
\nthe friends he made there.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“I got to meet a lot of other interns from across the
\nSoutheast and I plan to keep in touch with them,” Adcock
\nsaid. “Also, the training prepared me for the work I am
\ndoing (at the Nashville location) and helped me know what
\nto expect on my first job.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nKatie Farris of Vicksburg, agrees. “I have learned a ton,”
\nshe said. “I feel like this internship will put me a step
\nahead in my future career. It’s really been interesting to
\nsee everything I’ve learned in school come together.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nUpnik Patel of Cleveland, who is interning in Jackson with
\nSmith, Turner & Reeves, considers his experience as a
\ndirect stepping stone to his first job. “It’s a great
\nopportunity to get my foot in the door,” said Patel, who
\nplans to work an extra two months with the firm after his
\ninternship ends, then bank on his record there for nailing
\nhis first job with STR.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nBrittney Whidden of Oxford, an intern at Dixon-Hughes in
\nMemphis, feels like she is on her first job. “I am
\ndefinitely not just observing; I am getting to do the work
\njust as if I were a first-year associate,” Whidden said.
\n“They are doing a fantastic job at ensuring that I get the
\nmost out of my internship.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nWilder said he expects the school’s internship program to
\ncontinue to gain momentum as more students opt for the
\nopportunity.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
