OXFORD, Miss. \u2013 Jontae Warren, a second-year student in the University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy<\/a>, has accepted a summer internship through the Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences in Rochester, Minnesota.<\/p>\n

The internship will give Warren experience in the clinical\/outpatient setting as he rotates through six pharmacies during the 10-week stint. He will counsel patients, review prescription orders, participate in pharmacists’ interventions and provide drug information to health care providers as part of an interdisciplinary team.<\/p>\n

“I was very excited and relieved,” said Warren, a Booneville native. “I hope to take what I have learned inside the classroom and apply it, as well as build on my knowledge in the practice setting.<\/p>\n

“In addition, I hope to use this as a networking opportunity to gain new mentors and meet pharmacy students from across the country.”<\/p>\n

Warren is the second Ole Miss student pharmacist in three years to earn a nationally competitive Mayo Clinic internship, as Anna Crider completed it in 2017<\/a>. He credited the Ole Miss pharmacy program with instilling in him that the patient comes first, helping prepare him for this experience.<\/p>\n

“Since starting pharmacy school, I have always been taught that the patient should be right in the center of his or her care,” he said. “I believe that this lesson has prepared me for my internship because no patient is the same.<\/p>\n

“It is very important to know how to provide individualized care to the patient and include them in the decision-making of their health at every step of the way.”<\/p>\n

Warren keeps a busy extracurricular life. Along with memberships in numerous national pharmacy organizations, he serves in official roles for the Ole Miss Office of Pre-College Programs, Phi Delta Chi pharmacy fraternity and the student organization PediaRebs<\/a>.<\/p>\n

He interned last summer at Carilion Clinic in Roanoke, Virginia, and continues to gain experience at Walgreens Pharmacy in Batesville.<\/p>\n

Adam Pate, clinical associate professor of pharmacy practice, worked with Warren on his resume and interview skills. Warren’s determination and work ethic has allowed him to take advantage of many opportunities through pharmacy school, Pate said.<\/p>\n

“Jontae, as with many of our students, is willing to put in the work,” he said. “He shines a great spotlight on Ole Miss pharmacy because he embodies what I want to see and cultivate in our future pharmacists.<\/p>\n
