OXFORD,
\nMiss. – They may not be old enough to cast a vote in November’s
\nelection, but they are certainly old enough to cover presidential
\ndebate-related activities at the University of Mississippi.<\/p>\n

Ten
\nstaff members from Oxford High School’s monthly newspaper The Charger
\nworked alongside professional journalists from around the world to
\ncover the debate last week. Officially, they were credentialed to
\nassist the university’s S. Gale Denley Student Media Center by
\nparticipating in interviews, taking photographs and helping out with
\nbroadcast and radio segments.<\/p>\n

“Working the debates has just been
\na great experience,” said OHS senior Lydia Roberts, editor-in-chief of
\nThe Charger. “You get to see Oxford and Mississippi from a completely
\ndifferent view. To me, this is home, but other people don’t see it that
\nway.”
\n

Catherine Threlkeld, an OHS senior and The Charger’s associate editor, interviewed Fox News anchor Shepard Smith and NBC’s Tom Brokaw for The Charger’s politically-themed issue that came out Thursday. She was also able to meet Brokaw Thursday night after he spoke on campus.<\/p>\n

“It’s very humbling to be able to talk to someone like [Brokaw],” Threlkeld said. “It’s very exciting that the debate is here my senior year and I have all these opportunities that will really help when I get to college, just all that kind of experience with the debate and working with the university press is very useful.”<\/p>\n

Cynthia Ferguson, OHS journalism teacher and adviser to the student newspaper and yearbook, began contacting UM officials months ago, shortly after finding out that the debate would be held on the campus. Working with Student Media Center Interim Director Traci Mitchell, they were able to get her journalism students involved.<\/p>\n

“I hope they see that there are a lot of experiences out there that they could have in the journalism world and the journalism field that we can’t offer them here at the high school,” Ferguson said. “I think that they realize how much goes into it behind the scenes now. The opportunities that they’ve had this week go so far beyond what you can get out of a book or sitting in a classroom.”<\/p>\n

The OHS students met with members of the Student Media Center Wednesday night and began covering campus events Thursday.<\/p>\n

“They’re being assigned pretty much everything our student media students are working on,” Mitchell said. “We’re glad this opportunity was available to them and we’re glad to have their help. I think it’s important because they’re high school journalists and this is an incredible opportunity for all media, in particular up-and-coming journalists. We’re glad they were looking for a way to get the involved.”
\nThe Charger staff members were assigned in groups of two to multimedia teams, with specific areas of campus or topics to cover. They did everything from reporting about protestors, shadowing UM student reporters and photographing events in the Grove to working with UM’s student-run radio and television stations, Mitchell said.<\/p>\n

“I really love having this opportunity to be able to get all this kind of working experience,” said Frances Sullivan-Gonzalez, an OHS senior who is opinions editor and business manager for The Charger. “I love being able to see how all this works. It’s so different from anything I’ve every experienced before.”<\/p>\n
