OXFORD,
\nMiss. – Women of the University of Mississippi are helping to fight
\nbreast cancer with the fifth annual Cancer Awareness Research and
\nEradication Walk Thursday (Oct. 9).<\/p>\n
Sponsored by the Panhellenic
\nCouncil, the C.A.R.E. Walk begins registration at 3:30 p.m. on the
\nStudent Union Plaza, with the two-mile walk around campus beginning at
\n4 p.m. A $15 donation is required to participate. Each participant will
\nreceive a T-shirt and refreshments following the event.
\n
“It’s for a great cause,” said Jenna Jones, Panhellenic Council president. All proceeds go to the North Mississippi Baptist Memorial Hospital to help with breast cancer awareness, research and eradication. “We’ve raised $1,000 so far this year,” Jones said.<\/p>\n
Both women and men from the Lafayette-Oxford-University community are invited to walk. “You can walk in honor of someone,” Jones said. “We have survivors walk as well.”<\/p>\n
Jones said the walk offers an opportunity to meet new people or gather with old friends for a good cause. “If you are looking for a way to get in some community service, this is a great opportunity,” she said.<\/p>\n
It is estimated that 182,460 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in females in the United States during 2008. Through the C.A.R.E. Walk, the Panhellenic Council is bringing awareness to young women and the community, as well as providing funds to the Oxford Cancer Center.<\/p>\n
“We always say that everybody knows a person who has been affected by cancer. This is just a great way to get out there and support them,” Jones said.<\/p>\n
Those interested in participating in the walk can pre-register by obtaining a registration form from the Greek Affairs office, Union 406.
