OXFORD, Miss. – The University of Mississippi Faculty Senate has elected Kenneth Sufka as its new chair for the 2008-09 term.<\/p>\n

“I’m
\nreally looking forward to being able to serve the Faculty Senate in a
\nnumber of ways,” said Sufka, professor of psychology and pharmacology.
\n“I think the Faculty Senate can have an important role in faculty
\ngovernance by creating an effective dialogue between our group and the
\nadministration, and help in handling the day-to-day details of running
\na major university.”
\n

The Faculty Senate serves as the representative body of the faculty and relays recommendations and governance issues to the administration. Each campus department has an elected representative who serves. <\/p>\n

“I have been nominating Ken Sufka for chair ever since I’ve been on the senate, and I know he will be outstanding,” said John Williamson, professor of medicinal chemistry and a former Faculty Senate chair. Sufka has a great relationship with the chancellor and provost and is respected by the faculty and students, Williamson said.<\/p>\n

“He is one of the highlights of the faculty on campus. Everyone knows Ken and everybody respects him,” he said.<\/p>\n

Sufka was elected in a unanimous vote by senate members. <\/p>\n

“I hope I can be effective in the role as Faculty Senate chair, and I’m excited to get started,” he said. <\/p>\n

Sufka joined the faculty in the Department of Psychology in 1992. He served as an elected senator on several occasions, including the past three years. He has been recognized and received many awards while at UM, including the Elsie M. Hood Outstanding Teaching Award in 1996, the Faculty Achievement Award in 2005 and the Thomas F. Frist Student Service Award in 2006. He received the APA Presidential Citation in 2000 for his national efforts in psychology curricular reform. <\/p>\n
