What about the effect of
hurricanes Katrina and Rita on the criminal justice system in New
Orleans?

Domestic travel options are available to all University
of Mississippi students through the new Study USA program, which offers
studies in criminal justice, hospitality management, hotel and casino
management, and art.

Study USA, housed in the Division of
Outreach and Continuing Education, offers two classes this fall and
even more are on tap for both the winter intersession in Jaunary and
the 2009 spring semester.

The classes typically last between five and 10 days and provide an excellent option for students who want to travel inside the United States, said Laura Antonow, Study USA program director.

“During winter intersession, students have the opportunity to study as close to home as Clarksdale or as far away as New York,” Antonow said. “Those two courses cover anthropology and business, respectively. The idea is that we will eventually have offerings for many majors, because we

want to be inclusive in order to benefit all students.”

The four courses highlighting this year’s winter intersession are a hotel course in Las Vegas, ceramics in St. Petersburg, Fla., business dynamics in New York and Special Topics in Criminal Justice in New Orleans. Students who choose to study the hotel and casino business in Las Vegas tour facilities in select hotels, event centers, nightclubs and stages, and meet with industry leaders to develop an understanding of hotel operations. The weeklong course is set for Jan. 1-8, 2009, and the cost is $1,595.

For a more hands-on approach, students can spend 15 days in St. Petersburg, where they will learn traditional Japanese-style anagama firing of ceramics at St. Petersburg Clay Co., and also visit private collections of local artists. The course runs Jan. 5-20 and costs $725.

The Organizational Behavior and Business Dynamics course allows students to visit the New York Stock Exchange, NBC Studios in Rockefeller Center, the garment districts along Fashion Avenue and a Broadway theater. The fee is $2,175, with the dates for the trip to be determined.

Students opting for the criminal justice program learn about the historical, political and social factors in the New Orleans area that influence legal institutions and systems of justice. They will develop an understanding of the challenges that hurricanes Katrina and Rita presented to local, state and federal agencies in the Big Easy. The course is set for Jan. 5-21, and the cost is $1,625.

Close to home, students can work on the archaeological excavation of the Carson Mounds site in the Mississippi Delta. The two-week course runs Jan. 5-20, and the cost is $940.

Course fees include lodging, materials, some meals and, for all except the New York trip, transportation. Antonow said she hopes the program will soon be able to offer scholarships, but students should check with the UM Financial Aid Office for existing aid options.

Antonow encourages students to review their options and consider Study USA as a supplemental class for both the fall and spring semesters.

“There are just so many great opportunities that can be had here in the United States,” she said.

Faculty members interested in developing other courses throughout the country are invited to submit proposals to the Study USA office.

For more information about Study USA, contact Antonow at antonow@olemiss.edu or 662-915-6511, or go to http://www.outreach.olemiss.edu/study?usa/index.html .
