OXFORD,
\nMiss. – The University of Mississippi Department of Music presents the
\nvoice recital “Made in America” Sunday (Oct. 19) in Nutt Auditorium.<\/p>\n
Free
\nand open to the public, the 3 p.m. program features selections by
\nAmerican composers Leslie Adams, Seymour Barab, Jeff Blumenkrantz,
\nWilliam Bolcom, Jack Gallagher and Nancy Van de Vate.

Soprano Nancy Balach, associate professor of music, will perform the selections, accompanied by pianist Stacy Rodgers, professor of music, and trumpeter John Schuesselin, assistant professor.<\/p>\n
“I’ve had personal contact with all six composers, and they each have their own unique style,” Balach said. “I’m excited about bringing a new element to the standard recital format by combining audio and video to deliver an interesting, multimedia view of music and share a new experience with the audience.”<\/p>\n
The recital also is to include “Let Me Make Songs,” a new piece written by composer Jack Gallagher. The work was commissioned by Balach and features the poetry of Frances E.W. Harper.<\/p>\n
Gallagher, professor of music at the College of Wooster in Ohio, is to deliver a lecture to Ole Miss music students at 1 p.m. Monday (Oct. 20) in Nutt Auditorium.<\/p>\n
The recital and lecture are part of the music department’s mission “to pursue nationally competitive training and development of music educators, scholars and performers,” Rodgers said.<\/p>\n
“There is a tremendous amount of highly enjoyable music out there that few people – at least outside of New York – are aware of,” he said. “I think the audience will also appreciate the fact that Nancy Balach is an exceptionally fine singer.”<\/p>\n
