Photo by Shea Stewart\/University Marketing and Communications<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\">OXFORD, Miss. \u2013 Six <span style=\"color: #333333;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/olemiss.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">University of Mississippi<\/a>&nbsp;<\/span>undergraduate students spent their summer exploring research opportunities in neuroscience and brain wellness as part of the inaugural Neuroscience Summer Research Education Program.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: start; widows: 2; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; text-decoration-style: initial; text-decoration-color: initial; word-spacing: 0px;\">An initiative of the university&#8217;s&nbsp;<span style=\"color: #333333;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/flagshipconstellations.olemiss.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Flagship Constellations<\/a><\/span>, the program provided stipends for undergraduate students to engage in eight-week collaborative research with a mentor exploring neuroscience related to brain&nbsp;wellness.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\">Split between the Oxford campus and the&nbsp;<span style=\"color: #333333;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.umc.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">University of Mississippi Medical Center<\/a><\/span>, the program aims to develop new pipelines for pre-graduate and pre-medical students interested in neuroscience.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: start; widows: 2; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; text-decoration-style: initial; text-decoration-color: initial; word-spacing: 0px;\">&#8220;The participating students gained research experience and developed connections with neuroscience faculty at the Oxford and Jackson campuses,&#8221; said Kristie Willett, a team leader of the&nbsp;<span style=\"color: #333333;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/flagshipconstellations.olemiss.edu\/brain-wellness\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brain Wellness Flagship Constellation<\/a><\/span>, which funded the program. She worked with a program known as EEGLAB that processes data generated by recording the electrical properties of the brain. She also used virtual reality in her research.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: start; widows: 2; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; text-decoration-style: initial; text-decoration-color: initial; word-spacing: 0px;\">&#8220;Learning to work with EEGLAB would have to be my favorite part because I have found a lot of different ways to analyze the data we have taken.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: start; widows: 2; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; text-decoration-style: initial; text-decoration-color: initial; word-spacing: 0px;\">The program supported 10 undergraduate students. Joining the Ole Miss students in the program were students from Millsaps College, Mississippi State University, Nazareth College and Wesleyan College.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: start; widows: 2; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; text-decoration-style: initial; text-decoration-color: initial; word-spacing: 0px;\">&#8220;The&nbsp;students expressed a great deal of satisfaction with the program, and several&nbsp;indicated that they are&nbsp;ready to attend graduate school after completing their degree,&#8221; said Gregg Roman, a team leader of the Brain Wellness Flagship Constellation. Roman also is professor and chair of biology at UM.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: start; widows: 2; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; text-decoration-style: initial; text-decoration-color: initial; word-spacing: 0px;\">&#8220;Several faculty participants expressed great enthusiasm&nbsp;with the outcome and&nbsp;would even&nbsp;like to see it expanded. I view the program as a success.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: start; widows: 2; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; text-decoration-style: initial; text-decoration-color: initial; word-spacing: 0px;\">At the end of the program, students presented their work during an expo at the School of Pharmacy. The July 23 event included five-minute presentations from neuroscientist mentors and other neuroscientists, poster presentations by the students and a keynote address from <span style=\"color: #333333;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.umc.edu\/som\/Departments%20and%20Offices\/SOM%20Departments\/Neurobiology\/About-Us\/Faculty1\/Harry-Pantazopoulos.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Harry Pantazopoulos<\/a><\/span>, an assistant professor of neurobiology and anatomical sciences at UMMC.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: start; widows: 2; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; text-decoration-style: initial; text-decoration-color: initial; word-spacing: 0px;\">The program kicked off with an early June visit to&nbsp;<span style=\"color: #333333;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.umc.edu\/news\/News_Articles\/2017\/November\/new-ummc-research-building-to-promote-discovery-to-recovery.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">UMMC&#8217;s Translational Research Center<\/a><\/span>&nbsp;in Jackson, which houses the Gertrude C. Ford MIND Research Center and the Neuro Institute, among other research areas.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: start; widows: 2; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; text-decoration-style: initial; text-decoration-color: initial; word-spacing: 0px;\">The Flagship Constellations initiative,&nbsp;<span style=\"color: #333333;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/um-launches-flagship-constellations-tackle-grand-challenges\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">unveiled in November 2017<\/a><\/span>, is a collaborative effort among faculty, staff and students from the Oxford campus and UMMC&nbsp;to explore and solve complex issues through the diversity of ideas. The initiative includes multidisciplinary teams working to find solutions to grand challenges in the areas of brain wellness, community well-being and disaster resilience.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: start; widows: 2; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; text-decoration-style: initial; text-decoration-color: initial; word-spacing: 0px;\">The Brain Wellness Flagship Constellation includes an academically diverse team researching better understandings behind brain function as a result of injury, addiction and disease. The team is engaged in population-based research, clinical care, education and basic research to assist in the development of technologies and evidence-based practices that could bolster the prevention of and recovery from brain impairment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: start; widows: 2; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; text-decoration-style: initial; text-decoration-color: initial; word-spacing: 0px;\">The program&#8217;s stipends were supported by&nbsp;<span style=\"color: #333333;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/duffs-honor-late-father-major-gift\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a $1 million donation to the Flagship Constellations initiative<\/a>&nbsp;<\/span>by Thomas and Jim Duff,&nbsp;who created the Ernest R.
