\nOXFORD, Miss. – The Lafayette-Oxford-University Symphony Orchestra presents its opening concert for the 2008-09 season Monday (Oct. 27) at the University of Mississippi.\n<\/p>\n

\nTickets for the 8 p.m. concert at the Gertrude C. Ford Center for the
\nPerforming Arts are $10 for general admission and $6 for students with
\nID. Tickets are available by calling the UM Box Office at 662-915-7411
\nor by visiting the Box Office in the Ole Miss Student Union from 10
\na.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.<\/p>\n

The evening program opens with Carl Maria von Weber’s “Oberon” and
\nconcludes with three of Antonin Dvorak’s Slavonic Dances, Op. 46. Other
\npieces slated for the concert include Mozart’s Divertimento in D major
\nand Gabriel Faure’s “Elegie” for solo violoncello and orchestra,
\nfeaturing guest cellist Susan Gaston.<\/p>\n

“‘Elegie’ is such melancholic work with rich tones,” Gaston said. “Most
\noften, the piece is perfomed with a pianist, so I’m lucky and excited
\nto get to play with an orchestra.”<\/p>\n

Gaston, a native of Charlottesville, Va., has served on the music
\nfaculty since 1997 as adjunct instructor of violoncello and string bass
\nand as cellist with the Oxford Piano Trio. She has degrees from Duke
\nUniversity and the University of Arizona, where she studied with Gordon
\nEpperson. Before moving to Oxford, Gaston was a faculty member at
\nMcNeese State University, where she taught cello, string bass, music
\nhistory and music appreciation.<\/p>\n
