Submitted photo<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\">OXFORD, Miss. \u2013 Three students in the <span style=\"color: #333333;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/olemiss.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">University of Mississippi<\/a><\/span>&#8216;s growing biomedical engineering department spent their summer researching tiny tools that could have huge impacts around the world.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: start; widows: 2; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; text-decoration-style: initial; text-decoration-color: initial; word-spacing: 0px;\">The undergraduate researchers were members of the Summer Undergraduate Research Experience in Nanobiotechnology, a program funded through an internal grant won by a team of&nbsp;Ole Miss&nbsp;<span style=\"color: #333333;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/biomedical.olemiss.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">biomedical engineering<\/a>&nbsp;<\/span>and chemical engineering faculty. Submitted photo<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: start; widows: 2; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; text-decoration-style: initial; text-decoration-color: initial; word-spacing: 0px;\">&#8220;We were able to recruit exceptionally talented undergraduates to participate and engage in brand new research projects at UM,&#8221; said&nbsp;<span style=\"color: #333333;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/reinemann-goss-returns-alma-mater-faculty-member\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nikki Reinemann<\/a><\/span>, assistant professor of biomedical engineering and affiliate assistant professor of chemical engineering.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\">&#8220;They rose to the occasion and were able to obtain significant results that will set them up for conference presentations and journal publications, making them more professionally competitive for future careers in research and industry.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: start; widows: 2; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; text-decoration-style: initial; text-decoration-color: initial; word-spacing: 0px;\">Mentors for the group included Reinemann, who served as program director; Adam Smith, chair and associate professor of&nbsp;<span style=\"color: #333333;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.olemiss.edu\/chemical\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">chemical engineering<\/a><\/span>, academic director of general engineering and associate professor of biomedical engineering; and&nbsp;<span style=\"color: #333333;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/thomas-werfel-joins-biomedical-engineering-faculty\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Thomas Werfel<\/a><\/span>, assistant professor of biomedical engineering, affiliate assistant professor of chemical engineering and joint assistant professor of biomolecular sciences. Dave Puleo, dean of the&nbsp;<span style=\"color: #333333;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.olemiss.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">School of Engineering<\/a>&nbsp;<\/span>and professor of biomedical engineering, also served as a mentor.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: start; widows: 2; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; text-decoration-style: initial; text-decoration-color: initial; word-spacing: 0px;\">Daily worked with Smith in the&nbsp;Polymer Engineering Lab,&nbsp;with guidance from Puleo in developing biomaterials to produce biodegradable films for drug-delivery applications.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: start; widows: 2; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; text-decoration-style: initial; text-decoration-color: initial; word-spacing: 0px;\">Davis has worked with Reinemann in the&nbsp;<span style=\"color: #333333;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mbelab.olemiss.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Molecular Biophysics and Engineering Lab<\/a>&nbsp;<\/span>since the fall of 2018. Hendershot worked with Werfel in the&nbsp;Interdisciplinary NanoBioSciences Lab&nbsp;on developing novel nanomaterials that could be effective in the treatment of certain cancers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: start; widows: 2; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; text-decoration-style: initial; text-decoration-color: initial; word-spacing: 0px;\">&#8220;We had a great first summer,&#8221; Werfel said. &#8220;We saw a lot of the initial infrastructure for a successful summer research program in the important area of nanobiotechnology come together.
