Photo by Kevin Bain\/Ole Miss Digital Imaging Services<\/p><\/div>\n<p>OXFORD, Miss. \u2013 A week after announcing his resignation from Fox News, famed broadcast journalist Shepard Smith returned to the University of Mississippi Friday (Oct. 18) to speak to a roomful of journalism and integrated marketing communications students at the School of Journalism and New Media.<\/p>\n<p>Smith shared that while technology will always change, the rules of good journalism practice and citizenship never change.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFirst and foremost, you must always operate in what\u2019s good for the public interest,\u201d he said. \u201cFreedom of the press is protected by the Constitution. With that freedom comes responsibility.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Smith told the future journalists they should attribute whatever they do not see, hear, smell or taste. He also encouraged them to practice full disclosure and always show respect.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlways remember that with every news story there are people who deserve to be treated with respect,\u201d he said. \u201cRespect every single person. Photo by Kevin Bain\/Ole Miss Digital Imaging Services<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Smith also challenged the audience to \u201cfix the mess\u201d created by his generation and older.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou are the future,\u201d he told a standing-room-only crowd. \u201cWe messed it (the country) up. You have to fix it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reflecting on his remarkable career as an investigative reporter of some of the nation\u2019s most controversial incidents, Smith urged his listeners to begin by always telling the truth \u2013 no matter how uncomfortable it may make some or how awkward the results might be.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMistakes can usually be corrected, but you have to do so with the same fervor that you made the mistake,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s just so much easier to tell the truth. Admit that you screwed it up. The moment you don\u2019t tell the truth, you\u2019ve betrayed your audience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Smith said teamwork is also extremely important.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt Ole Miss, you learn how to make friends and get along with people,\u201d the Holly Springs native said. \u201cIf you learn those things, you can go anywhere you want to go and achieve anything you want to achieve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After working at Fox News for 23 years \u2013 since its first broadcast in 1996 \u2013 the network&#8217;s senior correspondent, managing editor and chief news anchor abruptly announced on his program, \u201cShepard Smith Reporting,\u201d that he was leaving the network.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI left because it was time for a change,\u201d Smith said. \u201cSince then, I\u2019ve been scheduling appearances at several universities around the country. Ole Miss was my first stop. Photo by Kevin Bain\/Ole Miss Digital Imaging Services<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Students and faculty said Smith\u2019s remarks and candor left a lasting impression on them.<\/p>\n<p>Kendall Chavarria, a senior integrated marketing communications major from Punta Gorda, Florida, took notes during the talk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought it was cool how he said we have to always tell the truth,\u201d Chavarria said. \u201cIt\u2019s obviously something he is passionate about.
