OXFORD,
\nMiss. – For the eighth year, the University of Mississippi Museum
\noffers for sale the replica of a historic local landmark in a
\ncollectible holiday keepsake, this time featuring Oxford City Hall.<\/p>\n

The
\ngold-plated, commemorative keepsake is available for $15 plus tax.
\nCollectibles from previous years \u00ad featuring Barnard Observatory, the
\nOld Skipwith House, Brandt Memory House, the Lyceum, Ventress Hall and
\nthe Lafayette County Courthouse \u00ad can be purchased individually or as a
\nset of eight, including the current edition, for $105 plus tax.<\/p>\n

Orders
\ncan be placed through the Museum’s gift shop from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30
\np.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, or via credit
\ncard by telephone at 662-915-7073. Orders to be shipped in time for the
\nholiday must be placed by Dec. 15 and require a $5 handling fee.<\/p>\n

“Since
\n2000, the museum has produced a replica of a historic building on
\ncampus as a fundraiser,” said Albert Sperath, director of the
\nUniversity Museum and Historic Houses. “This year, we are moving off
\ncampus for the heart of Oxford and the University, which is City Hall.”<\/p>\n

Oxonian
\nand local historian Jack Lamar Mayfield said the original city hall
\nbuilding was erected in 1883 using two $25,000 federal appropriations.
\nPrior to its construction, the University Hotel stood until 1864 when
\nthe downtown area was burned to the ground.<\/p>\n

“Sometime between
\n1973 and 1974, the City of Oxford and the federal government made a
\nland swap,” Mayfield said. “The agreement moved City Hall from where
\nthe Federal Building is now at the corner of 29th Street and West
\nJackson Avenue.”<\/p>\n
