OXFORD, Miss. – Acclaimed author Alice Mattison visits the University
\nof Mississippi Thursday (Nov. 13) as part of the Grisham Visiting
\nWriter Series.<\/p>\n
Mattison is scheduled to give a 7 p.m. reading in Peabody Hall, Room 206. The event is free and open to the public.<\/p>\n
“Her writing is smart and beautiful,” said Gary Short, visiting
\nprofessor of English. “She seems to have a particular knack for
\nrevealing truths about modern life.”<\/p>\n
Mattison has written four short story collections, including “In Case
\nWe’re Separated” and “Men Giving Money, Women Yelling” – both of which
\nwere named notable books by The New York Times. Her novels include “The
\nBook Borrower,” “The Wedding of the Two-Headed Woman” and, most
\nrecently, “Nothing is Quite Forgotten in Brooklyn.”<\/p>\n
A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., Mattison studied at Queens College and
\nHarvard University. She teaches fiction writing in the graduate program
\nat Bennington College in Vermont.<\/p>\n
“Alice Mattison is a writer’s writer,” wrote a critic for The Los
\nAngeles Times. “Her gift for storytelling and ability to create rich,
\nmultidimensional characters prove, once again, that she is a master of
\nher craft.”<\/p>\n
