OXFORD,
\nMiss. – William F. Shughart II, Frederick A. P. Barnard Distinguished
\nProfessor of Economics at the University of Mississippi, is to be
\ninstalled as president-elect of the Southern Economic Association later
\nthis week at the group’s 78th annual meeting.<\/p>\n

Shughart was
\nnominated for the post by a distinguished committee of economists and
\nelected by a vote of the SEA’s entire membership of 1,625 members,
\nrepresenting all 50 states and 30 foreign countries. The SEA meeting
\nruns Thursday through Sunday (Nov. 20-23) in Washington, D.C.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0
\n

“As the 82nd president elect of the Southern Economic Association, Dr. Shughart brings to office a lengthy record of both distinguished scholarship and professional service, reflecting the finest traditions of the South, and takes his place among the most prominent economists the nation has produced,” said J.R. Clark, SEA secretary\/treasurer and the Scott L. Probasco Chair of Free Enterprise in the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga College of Business.<\/p>\n

In his new post, Shughart’s primary responsibility will be to organize the association’s annual international conference next year, after which he becomes SEA president.<\/p>\n

“Dr. Shughart is a scholar of the first rank, one whom we are fortunate to have as a member of the college faculty,” said Glenn Hopkins, dean of UM’s College of Liberal Arts. “His appointment as president-elect of the Southern Economic Association underscores the strength of his work and his reputation, and, also, highlights the excellence of our entire Department of Economics.”<\/p>\n

Shughart received his PhD from Texas A&M University and taught at Clemson and George Mason University. He was special assistant to the director of the Federal Trade Commission’s Bureau of Economics during the Reagan administration. He is senior fellow at The Independent Institute in Oakland, Calif., and editor-in-chief of the journal Public Choice, which studies the intersection of economics and political science. He has published nearly 200 scholarly articles, book chapters and reviews.<\/p>\n

“I am truly honored to have been elected to this post by the many fine scholars around the country and around the globe who belong to the SEA,” Shughart said. “I look forward to organizing a conference program for next year that justifies their confidence in me.”<\/p>\n

The Southern Economic Association is one of the oldest regional economics associations in the United States, dating back to a conference held in Atlanta in November 1928. The Southern Economic Journal began publication in 1933 and is the eighth oldest American scholarly journal in economics. From its founding, the purpose of the Southern Economic Association has been to further the education of scholars and the public in economic affairs. Toward this end, it seeks to stimulate interest in and disseminate results of recent research in theory and applied economics.<\/p>\n

Past presidents of the association include James Gwartney of the Florida State University Department of Economics, Barry T. Hirsch of the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies at Georgia State University and Catherine C. Eckel of the School of Social Sciences at University of Texas at Dallas.<\/p>\n
