OXFORD,
\nMiss. – A University of Mississippi civil engineering research group is
\nfeatured in the December issue of the Engineering Mechanics Institute’s
\nonline newsletter.<\/p>\n

The Nano-Infrastructure Research Group, which
\napplies recent developments in nanotechnology to the more traditional
\nareas of civil engineering, was reported as one of the first in the
\nnation to have made advancements in such research.<\/p>\n

Nanotechnology
\nrefers to the use of matter on an atomic and molecular scale.
\nGenerally, it deals with structures that measure only 100 nanometers or
\nsmaller, and involves developing materials or even tiny machines within
\nthat size. A nanometer is one-billionth of a meter.<\/p>\n

The EMI of
\nthe American Society of Civil Engineers is one of the nation’s premier
\nprofessional organizations focusing on developing applied mechanics.<\/p>\n

Alexander
\nCheng, chair and professor of civil engineering, said his article
\npresents the research group’s goals, which include understanding the
\nmechanics of nanomaterials and using the nanomaterials to improve the
\nnation’s infrastructure (i.e. buildings, roadways, bridges, etc.). A
\nsampling of the group’s research topics and research projects, lists of
\nselected publications and links to relevant Web pages are also included.<\/p>\n

“This
\nnewsletter was sent to about 2,000 members of EMI and about another
\n2,000 nonmembers, Cheng said. “We look forward to continue working in
\nthis forefront research area.”<\/p>\n

Amar Chaker, director of the EMI,
\nsaid the organization in pleased that the UM research group’s
\nachievements are among the first to be spotlighted in the newsletter.<\/p>\n

“Dr.
\nCheng’s article will undoubtedly encourage others EMI members to submit
\nsimilar reports profiling their research groups for future
\npublication,” Chaker said.<\/p>\n
